These Fifty Days of Easter

“Go in the peace of Christ, alleluia, alleluia!”
“Thanks be to God, alleluia, alleluia!”

These beautiful words usher in the fifty glorious days of the Easter. Easter is “the feast of feasts” because it celebrates the core of the Christian mystery of the new life in the Holy Spirit brought about in the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ. The wonderful work of God on the cross is of one piece with the wonderful works of God in the Resurrection, the Ascension, and the sending of the Holy Spirit. The Church calls this the “paschal mystery.”

Citing both Scripture and the documents of the Church, author Hans Christoffersen explains why Easter does not end on Easter Sunday, but continues through Ascension and culminates on Pentecost—a period of mystagogy, of a deepening understanding of the paschal mystery, in which we are filled with the Holy Spirit and sent out to do Christ’s ministry.
