The Traditions We Share

In this pamphlet, Dr. Eugene Fisher (Director of Catholic/Jewish Relations for the National Conference of Catholic Bishops), traces the origin of the Christian liturgical calendar to ancient Jewish tradition. Readers will discover the similarities and differences in the ways that Jews and Christians celebrate Pentecost/Shavuot, Thanksgiving/Sukkot, Advent/Rosh Hashanah, Christmas/Hanukkah, Mardi Gras/Purim, Sunday/Sabbath, as well as various life cycle events.

Properly understood, both our similarities and differences with Judaism can enrich our appreciation for the Jewish faith and rituals that Jesus himself observed all his life. At the same time, this understanding can increase our appreciation for the faith we live as Catholics.
